Freelancing on Freelancer... and elsewhere
March 24th 2003, 21:33 CET by crash

While idly paging through the user manual for Freelancer, I came across the credits page. Looks like MS took the title of the game really seriously.

To wit: At the bottom of the page is a footnote-style legend for a series of colored dots next to names. Green is ArtSource, yellow is "Murder of Crows" (no idea), blue is VMC Consulting, and red is Volt Services Group. Checking past MS games, those dots have been there, but primarily in the QA section. Not too unusual; having a pack of temporary and experienced (one hopes) QA hit-men isn't a bad idea at all.

But for Freelancer, one of the engine coders is from Volt. So's a game programming guy. And a designer. Four more designers are from VMC. All but one of the in-game cinematics team came from VMC. The entire audio staff was courtesy of Volt. The entire test team but one, Volt. Looking at this page, and the amount of talent scattered across departments, and where they came from... it's like, damn, it's not too far of a stretch to imagine a day where an idea man with enough money can simply walk into Volt or VMC and hire an entire temporary game design team.

With the vetting process and checks and tests (and insurance and the like) that temporary services provide, in a lot of ways it may be actually better to not staff a team yourself. Sure, it'll be more expensive, but you won't have to worry about an HR department at all--let the temp services handle that. Hire what you need when you need it, knowing you're getting full value for your money, not having to worry about all the overhead...

Makes a lot of sense.

Why, then, does it give me the willies?

There was a re-release of "Kill 'Em All" with "Am I Evil?" and "Blitzkrieg" thrown in.

Called 'Metal up your ass', limited cassette run, had a charming hand coming out of a toilet clutching a barbed mace in its hand.

Anaethesia (aka 'pulling teeth) is Cliff Burton noodling around with a fuzzbox and a crybaby and newstead tried to play it during several live sets (like the Milton Keynes bowl) but it never quite sounded quite right.  Of course, when you hear that howl at the start of 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' from the earlier tapes / early live shows.  Lets just say with Cliff it had vibrancy with Newstead it was mechanical, and now with Trujillo playing it its got some balls behind it again.

Maybe in Ireland.  My copy was still called "Kill 'em All".  Same cover and everything, just 2 new songs added.

I never had a problem with Newstead - he even helped out on vocals sometimes.  And at least Newstead realized when he was on stage and did crazy things like ... move around.

I think he's talking about "Garage Days Re-Revisited."  Also had something with the lyrics "I got something to say...  I raped your mother today.  Doesn't matter much to me, as long as she's spread."  My buddy and I used to crank that song.

Aaah memories.  The other verse:  "I got something to say, I killed your baby today.  Doesn't matter much to me as long as it's dead."  Ah youthful angst.

The cover of Killing Joke's "The Wait" is damn classic.

Exactly. It was the CD release, which I forgot to mention.

Oh you mean the cover of The Misfits 'Last Caress'

Did you ever catch the MTV awards show they played on? Everyone yammered about them selling out, MTV expected Enter Sandman and Sad But True..... only for Metallica, going out live infront of most of Europe played....  Last Caress and So 'Fuckin' What loud, profanity laced and full tilt.

I swear you can hear people being fired in the background, was a sweetly vicious moment to see.

That turned me off of Freelancer rather quick.
